At Premier Plastic Plastic Surgery of Texas in Plano, we are excited to offer the newer technique of fat transfer (fat grafting or rejuvenation). Fat transfer has allowed plastic surgeons to expand our tools in treating many different cosmetic and reconstructive problems. In general, fat grafting can be used for facial rejuventation, hand rejuvenation, breast surgery, and filling soft-tissue defects after liposuction, trauma, surgery, etc. Fat transfer can be performed in the office or in the operating room depending on the area to be treated.

General Procedure

In the procedure, fat is harvested from an area of excess such as the abdomen, flanks, buttocks, thighs, etc in a technique similar to liposuction. This portion of the procedure can often be done under local anesthesia, especially if only a small amount of fat is needed. The fat is then treated to help separate the fragile fat cells from excess fluid and blood. The fat is then ready for injection into the face, hand, breast, or anywhere else needed. Again, this portion of the procedure can potentially be done under local anesthesia.

Advantages

The advantages of fat transfer are many. In facial rejuvenation, many fillers are available such as Restylane or Juvederm. While these fillers do an excellent job of restoring volume in the face and erasing deep wrinkles, they are only a temporary solution. These products last anywhere from 6 months to a year in most patients. When the patient’s own fat cells are transfered and incorporated in their new location, a potentially permanent solution is obtained. Fat is often called the perfect filler because not only does it restore volume and fill deep wrinkles, it is potentially permanent. Often, patients only need a touch-up every few years. Recent research has also identified the presence of stem cells with the transferred fat cells that help lead to improved skin quality and other benefits in the area of transfer.
